I like how they take up the whole lane and then are surprised someone would call them selfish. That’s just antagonizing the drivers.

af ter the first paragraph , even as a cyclist, I wanted to run this person off the road. Sorry but roads are for cars and bikes get to use them. They have motors. They can break 30 mph without needing a down hill run. Bikes can not. they should not be taking up a full lane fucking up traffic . Stay to the side and allow traffic to pass.

... I do what I normally do on long, steep downhills: take up the full lane.

It’s legal for a single bicycle to occupy a full lane in most states.
I suppose motorcycles are also selfish? And lane splitting in California is cheating or something?

oh man, a good old fashioned biker vs. driver fight.
I’m going to take both sides. I HATE road riders, but then expect concessions from drivers.

Motorcyclists are rarely at half the posted speed.
Few
would complain about cyclists if they kept up with everybody else.

I mean, if there’s no shoulder or other safe place to be and I can legally occupy a lane, I will.

I think you mistook be for having a dog in this fight.
I think it’s funny that she was surprised at people’s reactions.

As a driver, it is the groups of 20+ that take up the entire road. I honestly lose my mind

wierd innit
but even in england where they have downhills for me to have fun on ive always figured hugging the shoulder is best as most cars try to be as in the middle of the road as they can manage on twisty roads (well... all roads really)
ergo im safest where the cars dont like being as i see it
(but im also perfectly happy only running a tail light after dark as oncoming traffic doesnt need to see me... i can see them... so my view on whats safe probably dont mean all that much)

im safest where the cars dont like being
That’s always been my philosophy when biking. No way I’d take a full lane.

i’m just going to go with: assholes ruin things for everyone. doesn’t matter if you’re an ass in a car or an ass on a bike.

There are a lot things that are legal that also aren’t too smart. Open carry is perfectly legal in Arizona, but only idiots do it.

motorcycles have motors and can maintain speed with traffic. a bicyc le cannot.

It’s safer for me to take the lane. When I try to give people room, they do stupid stuff like try to squeeze past me, forcing me into the ditch. I’ve even had dumbasses try to pass me in a no-passing zone on an uphill climb. I watched one nearly get hit head-on because he couldn’t wait 30 seconds for me to top the hill.

I found the best lane deterrent is a child’s trailer. People give me lots of room when I’m towing.
(Not me, but it looks like a fun ride!)

Pretend I’m a tractor . They go slow, but nobody tries to squeeze by them. Everyone knows that a tractor has the right to be there and nobody questions that right. Everyone acts accordingly.

I’m not even a regular cyclist (it’s been a couple years) and some of the responses in this thread are disappointing.
By law in most states, bicycles have about as much of a right to the road as you do in your car or me on my motorcycle. In my experience, hugging the side of the road means drivers and truckers WILL push you into the shoulder or just completely off the road. We won’t even talk about the distracted ones... So as far as I’m concerned, I don’t care if I’m inconvenienced a minute or a few if that means a cyclist can get home safe.

I haven’t ridden more than a couple of miles in 30(?!) years so I have no dog in the fight, but I agree.

i never come up to a tractor driving around so i can;t really say much on that but a tractor is like 10' wide where as a bike is 2'. A bike can hug the should to allow cars to pass. If it is not safe, the driver should hold off until it is safe to pass. The biker should allow for this and not block the road. I guess it comes down to both people giving respect to the other, which today, is just a fucking dream.

I’m not “hugging the shoulder” to allow some dumbass in a car to pass me. It’s dangerous and unnecessary.
A mountain bike handlebar can be two feet wide. If I’m allowing myself a foot on the right for safety, then I’m taking up three feet of a standard eleven foot lane. Subtract out the additional three feet for the passing rule and that gives cars a five foot space in which to legally pass.
It can’t be done in most cars. Many of the SUVs and trucks on the road are more than six feet wide without mirrors. Add in another foot per side for standard mirrors and you have an eight-foot-wide machine toodling down the road.
D rivers can be reasonable and straddle the centerline while passing me safely. Most of them are just dicks and try to squeeze past. They can’t get it through their thick skulls that they CAN cross the centerline to pass safely.
This is why I often take the lane. Drivers won’t try to squeeze past if I’m riding the right tire track. I suppose something finally clicks in their heads and they actually cross the centerline and pass at a reasonable distance.

I like when people ride on a 4 lane highway and back up traffic and then start flipping people off like they are the asshole.
99% of cyclists are awful.
